Natural Remedies for Seasonal Allergies

Itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, congestion, sinus pressure, coughing, headaches…sound familiar?

These are many of the typical allergy symptoms in the spring and fall we experience when introduced to local allergens such as pollen. Many refer to the condition as hay fever or allergic rhinitis.

According to the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America,“6.1 million of the children population and 20 million of the adult population” in the US are affected by seasonal allergies. That’s a whole bunch of us who are miserable when things start blooming!

The good news is there are natural remedies you can try to combat those pesky allergies. Here are a few:

1) Local Bee Pollen and Honey:

By introducing your body to the allergens and enzymes found in local honey and bee pollen, you can prevent and treat the symptoms of allergies through a concept called immunotherapy. It works like an allergy shot or vaccine. You take small amounts of what you are allergic to, and over time, your body builds immunity to the allergen.

Bee Pollen contains B Vitamins and all 22 Amino Acids as well as protein, complex carbohydrates, and fiber. It is full of antioxidants that reduce inflammation and help alleviate allergies by naturally reducing histamine levels in the body. Try Harbin Hollow Bee Pollen from Middle TN.

Local Honey contains trace amounts of pollen, is commonly used as a cough suppressant, and can help reduce inflammation and sooth that pesky post-nasal drip making your throat sore. Harbin Hollow will offer local honey soon, but for now, check your favorite local nutrition store or farmers’ market or try some of our handcrafted elderberry syrup made with local honey.

2) Elderberry Syrup:

Elderberries have been used for centuries to treat medical ailments. They are full of antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties to help treat symptoms of seasonal allergies. “Since allergies involve an overreaction of the immune system as well as inflammation, elderberry’s ability to improve the immune system and calm inflammation can help provide allergy relief,” says Dr. Axe, a certified doctor of natural medicine, chiropractor, and clinical nutritionist.

Harbin Hollow Elderberry Syrup contains wild-crafted elderberries, local honey, fresh lemon, ginger root, Ceylon cinnamon, and whole cloves, all offering a wide array of health benefits including inhibiting inflammatory responses, suppressing cough, boosting the immune system, and fighting histamine reactions, all of which, help fight allergies.

Adults take 1 tbls and children take 1 tsp daily to help prevent symptoms and the same dose every 2-3 hours to treat them. We currently offer two recipes to combat allergies:

No Sugar Added Elderberry Syrup w/ Stevia

3) Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple Cider Vinegar contains healthy bacteria. It promotes immunity, supports lymphatic drainage, and helps breaks up mucus. Try 1-2 tablespoons a day when your allergies are acting up. Our favorite brand is Bragg’s ACV with “The Mother”.

4) Neti Pot:

This contraption works wonders! By rinsing your nasal and sinus passages with a saline solution, the Neti Pot clears allergens, reduces inflammation, and soothes irritated areas. Nasal irrigation provides instant relief. Simply tilt your head to the side and allow warm, sterile water to flow through your sinuses. NeilMed is the brand we use.
